As a hometown band, I’m trying pretty hard to like these guys. But they’re kind of sleepy. And they really don’t bring anything new to the table. Like you said, they just combine a bunch of old stuff– which itself can be interesting. But I’m not feeling ‘er here.

While it’s not top-to-bottom superb, Sigur Rós’ new album, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, has plenty to offer. There are six songs that could have descended from the heavens: Fljótavík; Suð í eyrum; ; Ára bátur; Góðan daginn; Festival; Við spilum endalaust. Where they would have wailed on the guitars on previous albums, they chose to go for a poppy sound here, e.g. Við spilum endalaust (great), Inní mér syngur vitleysingur (good), and Gobbledigook (not good, but the popular download choice on iTunes). Another impressive piece to the Sigur Rós puzzle.

Because it is an activity that does not have the possibility of resulting in offspring. My guess is that social norms evolved around this fact to discourage sexual contact that will not result in offspring.

The Onion headline for this week is Gay Pride Parade Sets Mainstream Acceptance of Gays Back 50 Years.
To honor The Onion, I’d like to form my responses as an American Voices article.
Joseph Brother - “How can we have enough evidence that homosexuality has a genetic basis when we don’t have enough evidence to believe in evolution, or even science? Lets look at John 3:18…”
Kwame “Kwam-ay” Smith - Ugh… so you’re telling me that I’ve been waiting for Patrick Swayze to turn gay for nothing?
Barb Dillon - “So my love for my husband would come down to taking my daily medication? There’s a Disney story.”
Speaking of The Onion, you must see their video Are We Giving The Robots That Run Our Society Too Much Power.

why do you think that we’ve evolved a dislike of homosexuality? My guess is that it would be entirely a cultural phenomenon.

I’m pretty sure a genetic basis for homosexuality would do nothing to help it’s acceptance in society. I think there’s an innate, visceral reaction that humans have to homosexuality– one that’s probably too also a result a of evolution. That doesn’t mean that homosexuality is inherently wrong, just that generations of evolution have hard-wired humans to react that way.
The only thing that’s going to help its acceptance is the slow erosion of socially norms by liberal thought. But even then, pockets of bigotry will subsist, just as they do for racism, sexism, JttMism, etc.

This website reminds me of that Christian ministries site that DMarsh discovered that had this blog going for a while. (I can’t find the blog post for it now; I swear it must have been deleted!) That website was fake (but also hilarious).
